A Night In History

Both East End boys got the win by KO Friday night at the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne with "The Mechanic" Paul Watson winning the 1st round against cruiserweight puncher Matthew Freshney who came back to take the 2nd landing some big uppercuts and pressured Watson.

Watson tightened his defense, picked up the pace and took control in the 4th round, dropping Freshney with some vicious body shots. The Tasmanian just made the count but "The Mechanic" had his tool box wide open and was unloading bombs on Freshney who began to slide on the ropes when experienced referee James Boland steps in to save the Tasmanian from further punishment.

It was a good win for Watson who has not boxed since his controversial loss in China in May. The supermiddleweight gave away weight to his cruiserweight opponent from the Apple Isle and will only compete at the super middle limit from now on. An ANBF title is his goal for next year.

2014 Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist "Lil' Bull" Andrew Moloney was in beastmode and took the ANBF Victorian Bantamweight Title in only his second professional fight with 15 seconds to go in the first round.

He slipped a right hand and let go a vicious left rip to the rib cage of tough 12 round Filipino fighter Jonathan Ligas who has won four of his last five bouts. The powerful and well placed left hook crippled Ligas who was writhing in pain from the shot and could not beat the count.

The Filipino fighter Ligas came straight at Moloney and was right in the fight with both boxers trading toe to toe until the punishing bodyshot left him helpless. The state title is the first of many belts for Andrew now 2-0 with 2KO's and his twin brother Jason who is also 2-0 with 2KO's.

Jason is taking a well earned break over Christmas and New Year as will Andrew who has had a very busy year to say the least including the 2014 BAI Australian Championships, AIBA World Championships and the gold winning performance in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and now the Victorian Bantamweight Championship fight.

Surely a favourite for sports star of the year!
